For contractors, local SEO comes down to four things in this order: a fully completed Google Business Profile, a dedicated page for every service-and-city combination you sell, a steady flow of recent reviews, and consistent name/address/phone data across directories. Everything else — backlinks, blogging, social — amplifies those four. It does not replace them.
Why the map pack matters more than the blue links
When a homeowner searches "plumber near me" or "AC repair [city]", Google shows the local map pack — three business listings with ratings and a call button — above the standard results. That block captures a large share of local clicks and calls. Ranking in it is driven by different signals than classic SEO: proximity, prominence, and relevance, expressed through your Google Business Profile and your reviews.
The 5-step playbook
1. Finish your Google Business Profile completely
- Exact business name, no keyword stuffing.
- Primary category matched to your core trade, plus secondary categories for the rest.
- Full service list with descriptions, service area set to the towns you actually cover.
- Real job photos uploaded monthly, not stock images.
- Hours, including emergency availability if you offer it.
2. Build one page per service and city
A single "Services" page cannot rank for twelve towns. Build a page for each combination that matters — "drain cleaning in Coral Gables", "AC repair in Hialeah" — each with unique copy, local proof, and its own Service and LocalBusiness schema. Thin, copy-pasted city pages get ignored; pages with real local detail rank.
3. Turn reviews into a system
Review count and recency are among the strongest map pack signals. Send an automated review request by text within an hour of every completed job, while the work is fresh. Reply to every review, positive or negative — Google reads that as an active, legitimate business.
4. Fix your citations
Your business name, address, and phone number must match exactly across Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, Angi, and the trade directories in your area. Mismatched data splits your authority.
5. Publish answer-first content
Write the pages that answer what customers ask before they call — "how much does a water heater replacement cost in [city]", "how long does AC installation take". Lead with the direct answer in the first paragraph. That structure is what Google's AI Overviews and ChatGPT quote when they answer local questions.
Priority order at a glance
Typical ranges — every market differs.
| Task | Effort | Time to impact |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Low | 2–4 weeks |
| Review system | Low (automated) | 4–8 weeks |
| City + service pages | Medium | 2–4 months |
| Citation cleanup | Medium | 1–3 months |
| Ongoing content | Ongoing | 3–6 months, compounding |
The mistake that undoes all of it
Ranking creates calls. If those calls hit voicemail, the SEO work funds your competitor's week. Pair local SEO with call coverage — see our answering service for contractors — so every ranking you earn turns into a booked job.
